History:
SS Vesteraalen set sail for the first time from Brattøra in Trondheim at 08.30 on Sunday 2 July 1893. Sixty-seven hours later, at 03.30 on 5 July, captain Richard With berthed this steamer in Hammerfest - 30 minutes ahead of his advertised arrival time. The Hurtigruten coastal express had been launched. Huge developments have occurred over the 115 years during which it has served the Norwegian coast. What was in reality a hazardous expedition in 1893 is today a tourist attraction, and Hurtigruten has become one of Norway's very strongest international brands.
